Ask The Doc: Puppy Biting

back to topic list

I have an 11 week male Yellow Lab(Pure-Bred) named Jake who just loves to nibble and bite hard. I have tried for over 2 weeks now to get him to listen to the "No" command and give him a play-toy and praise him when he obeys the command. The command has worked only a few (4 maybe ?) times, but he is just extremely aggressive right now. Is there anything that I can do to tame his urge to bite right now ? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !!!!

Dr. DeMichael: I'm assuming he tries to bite your fingers and hands most of the time. He'll get over this eventually but for now, try this: Rub a little butter on the back of your hand and then approach Jake, hand out and when he tries to bite, make him take notice of the butter. Repeat this training process as many times as it takes to get the message across. Then exchange the positive reinforcement, ie butter, with something else like a toy or treat.

Knowing Labradors as I do, it wouldn't surprise me if he reverts to being a "licker" instead of a "biter".
